Maybe I was hoping for too much, but I really wanted more from Andre, the Shrine Handmaiden, the Firekeeper, and Irina, among others. Dark Souls 3 originally disappointed me with a lack of NPC recognition. The new NPCs found in the DLC are a breath of fresh air. To top it off, the final battle is one of the toughest and most exciting fights in the game. All together, you're looking at draining 5 of those hefty health bars if you want to complete the DLC. They took Dark Souls 3's overarching theme of posing multiple threats in a boss room and cranked it up a notch. The 2 new bosses in Ashes of Ariandel are thrilling to fight. From Software put a lot of work into them and I absolutely love everything I've seen. It becomes immediately clear that the new weapons aren't mere clones of existing ones. In the first encounter alone you'll see two new weapons, a shield, and an armor set. Humanoid enemies show off new weapons and armor that you'll stumble upon while exploring the DLC. Before now, winged enemies in the Soulsborne series have been cursed with only the illusion of flight. For example, the new winged monsters actually fly across chasms in pursuit rather than flutter around.

A few of these baddies have shiny, new AI to learn and overcome. While exploring Ashes of Ariandel, you'll come across various new enemies. They've really hit the nail on the head with this new area. From Software masterfully combines a sprawling, open environment with the condensed, vertical levels they're well known for. Ashes of Ariandel has some of the best level design I've ever seen in a Soulsborne game. To iterate, the new area that comes with the DLC is the single biggest level yet within Dark Souls 3. The level of polish found in Ashes of Ariandel is easily equal to if not above and beyond that of the base game. While poking around, you'll find unique new weapons and spells, a few extra Titanite Slabs, new enemies, and even a couple new bosses. Overall, the new PvE content is a lot like exploring the pre-existing areas in Dark Souls 3. Ashes of Ariandel Review: PvE Content - 8/10

Refer to our unique Rating System for more information on review scores. The PvP arena covered in the latter section has its own score. The first covers the new PvE content, and is a reflection of the overall score we gave to the DLC. Since Ashes of Ariandel comes with two major new features, we are similarly splitting this review into two sections.
